VMware Price Increases – Abandon Ship?

VMware Price Increases

VMware Price Increases – Abandon Ship? VMWare’s 100 per cent subscription move sees major customers transition to lower cost alternatives.

VMware Price Increases – Abandon Ship? VMWare, being one of the most popular virtual machine and hypervisor technologies, appears to be once again in the spotlight in relation to contention about its future.

It has not been more than 6 months since Broadcom acquired VMWare in November 2023 last year, in a deal that saw a $US69 billion acquisition of capital transfer hands, and already serious questions are being asked.

Since completion of the purchase of VMWare by Broadcom, VMware has announced significant changes taking effect February 4, 2024. Along with some portfolio changes, this includes a transition to 100 per cent subscription licensing and the end of sale for VMware perpetual licenses.

This is a model that’s not always accepted with open arms, as the subscription model invariably ends up leaving less money in the pockets of the end users with more profit or development embedded into technologies or add-ons that unwanted by end users.

“The corporation may have miscalculated VMware customers’ willingness to endure outrageous cost increases.”

This resulting increase in cost due to Broadcom’s decision to embrace a subscription model has resulted in a cascade of clients moving over to more cost-effective solutions – many of these clients are of a size not to be taken lightly.

The global stock market share registry operator Computershare appears to have just decided to leave VMware altogether, rather than suffer Broadcom’s new licensing regime and price increases.

Computershare, an Australian company providing software solutions and financial products, currently operates well over 24,000 VMWare virtual machines, has now decided to ditch the VMWare for another solution after it was invoiced an amount 15 times higher than agreed upon in the initial contract.

Abandon Ship

Computershare CTO Kevin O’Connor, who was recently speaking at a Nutanix Next conference, said, “the company will likely abandon VMware’s hypervisor soon to focus exclusively on Nutanix products.”

Computershare is currently in the middle of a massive systems’ migration, moving 24,000 virtual machines from the “other” hypervisor to Nutanix AHV. According to O’Connor, the plan will likely be completed next year and will pay for itself in just a few months. The company will emerge from this migration “stronger and leaner,” with costs lower than they were before the acquisition.

In addition, the US operator of 28 hotel and casino venues across the United States, Boyd Gaming, has also come out ahead after dropping VMware in favour of Nutanix, which the CTO, Gregg Lowe stated at the same event. He said, “When Broadcom took over, they stopped a lot of innovation”.

Boyd Gaming has recently completed their migration of systems over to the new vendor, stating that he is thrilled with the move as he can now recover a 40-terabyte database in only 8 minutes.

The only known fact is that VMware’s powerful desktop hypervisors are now free for everyone, but it may be the case that Broadcom was never interested in this product line and had no intention of promoting it. Instead, the corporation may have miscalculated VMware customers’ willingness to endure outrageous VMware price increases just to access more VMware-related services and technologies.

Benefits Of Steel Conduit

Benefits Of Steel Conduit Include Resistance To Attack And Weather.

Benefits Of Steel Conduit – Most security installers would reach for PVC conduit before they’d go for steel conduits – PVC is less expensive, easier to work, easier to find, lighter and so easier to carry and fasten.

But for security applications, using steel conduits where cable runs are exposed is smart thinking. The beauty of using steel externally is varied. For a start, steel conduit is resistant to attack, with standard 20mm or 50mm diameter conduit able to withstand violent blows or pressure.

Weather resistance is another property of properly prepared steel conduit – in fact, it’s the measure by which steel conduit is measured. Medium-level weather resistance conduit is zinc-coated on the outside and has an internal coating of anti corrosive. Maximum protection levels are achieved by hot-dip galvanization of internal and external surfaces.

Steel conduit has a minimal co-efficient of thermal expansion and retains its shape, strength and form in both heat and cold. In the medium term, PVC conduits will fail this test and that’s before a few years of UV have done their work.

Make no mistake, PVC conduit has its place and properly installed – especially under the cover of a roofline – can have a long lifespan. But if you’re outside the sterile zone with a cable run, or you need to get through a rugged, wet environment chock full of vandals, think screwed steel conduit.

Note in closing that every steel conduit run should be earthed at its beginning with a connection between the conduit and the earthed metal enclosure of the control panel the conduit is servicing. If it’s impossible to earth the conduit directly, use an earthing conductor linked to an earth clip and firmly fixed to the conduit. Depending on the nature of the installation, any peripheral hardware along a cable/conduit run should be earthed if it’s connected to the conduit using any metal fixing.

Daniel Tuttle And Andy Lee Launch Prosite Security Supplying Ajax Ready Security Solutions.

Daniel Tuttle And Andy Lee Launch Prosite Security – Daniel Tuttle of PROCCTV and Andy Lee of SecuSafe have launched a joint venture called Prosite Security and will unveil a range of solar-powered alarm systems at SecTech Brisbane.

“Andy and I have entered into a business partnership to establish a new business called Prosite Security which will cater exclusively to commercial customers with its AJAX-ready equipment designed and engineered in Australia and manufactured in China,” Tuttle said.

“Andy brings extensive experience in manufacturing, logistics and distribution, in addition to product development expertise. Meanwhile, I will oversee the product development, marketing and sales efforts. Prosite Security will unveil its new products at SecTech Brisbane, showcased at the SecuSafe stand.”

The solutions include PROPOD, FENCEJUMPER and BLACKBOX, the latter of which is a full scale remote solar alarm system with 3rd party monitoring and visual verification.

The PROPOD and FENCEJUMPER alarm towers provide real-time detection of fence line breaches and unauthorized access within a 15-meter surveillance radius. Engineered for year-round autonomous operation using advanced battery and solar technology, towers are equipped with AJAX intrusion protection devices. They both can be easily moved between locations.

The deployment takes only 30 minutes and does not affect the workflow. The alarm towers provide comprehensive 24/7 monitoring for construction sites and vacant premises like warehouses, civil projects, and large retail spaces to protect against theft and vandalism.

Daniel Tuttle And Andy Lee Launch Prosite Security

Hub 2 (4G) Jeweller manages Ajax devices built into the PROPOD and FENCEJUMPER alarm towers, providing seamless connectivity and instant alerts. The 3 independent communication channels guarantee reliable communication between the hub and devices. Their control and configuration are available remotely.

The hub regularly checks the connection status with the devices, and all the data received is encrypted. If there is interference at the operating frequencies or when jamming is attempted, AJAX switches to a free radio frequency and sends notifications to the CMS and to system users.

After intrusion detection, MotionCam Outdoor Jeweller takes a series of photos displayed within 9 seconds in the AJAX apps or third-party monitoring software. This helps to evaluate the situation instantly, relieving users of unnecessary anxiety and preventing security companies from false patrol dispatches.

These detectors have an anti-masking system. If an obstacle blocks the field of view of anti-masking sensors or if they are painted, the detector promptly notifies users and a security company.

Upon detecting an intrusion, StreetSiren Jeweller, equipped with a 113 dB buzzer, immediately notifies the security company and deters an intruder. At the same time, visual verification is available in Ajax apps, enabling rapid response and threat mitigation.
