Media giant CNN has fired 3 employees who went to the office without being fully vaccinated against COVID-19, in a breach of company policy.
According to CNN president, Jeff Zucker, the network has a zero-tolerance policy full vaccination for all staff at the office or in the field but the policy was managed using an honour system, allowing staff to enter premises vaccinated or not.
“You need to be vaccinated to come to the office,” Zucker said. “And you need to be vaccinated to work in the field, with other employees, regardless of whether you enter an office or not. Period.”
Managing vaccination procedures is going to become a bigger issue globally, as well as in ANZ, where Australia’s most populous state NSW has today reported 356 new cases of Delta variant as part of an outbreak soft lockdowns have failed to contain.
NSW Health is trailing a rapid antigen test for construction workers and the NSW Government has advocated for vaccination for tradies without making vaccination mandatory. In response, privacy groups have claimed mandatory vaccination would be a breach of civil liberties, but these liberties are certain to be lost should infection rates continue to rise.
Arguably, the most effective way to manage COVID-19 vaccination where it is mandatory is to incorporate a vaccination rule into access control policy so staff and visitors who have not been vaccinated are unable to put other team members, or customers, at risk.
