Armaguard Rejects Lifeline

Armaguard Rejects Lifeline Will Negotiate With Customers Directly.

Armaguard rejects lifeline – Armaguard late last Thursday rejected a $A26 million lifeline that would have saved Australia’s largest cash in transit business from insolvency.

Armaguard Group’s chief executive Mick Cronin said the company would work with customers individually on a long-term solution to the cash in transit crisis formented by a transition to digital payments that has broken the existing business model.

“Armaguard confirms it is working constructively with all its customers, including its retail customers, banks and other key stakeholders regarding both short-term and long-term financial solutions for the industry to remain sustainable,” Cronin said.

Exactly what Armaguard’s plans are moving forward remains unclear – investment from its parent Linfox could keep Armaguard afloat, but pragmatic business choices would need to faced.

Optex PE Beam Wireless Ready With PowerG From DSC.

Optex PE Beam Wireless Ready – Optex PE Beam battery-operated is now wireless ready with PowerG from BGW Technologies.

“Last year we introduced security installers to the Optex short range photoelectric (PE) detectors – Optex OPXAX-200TF/TFR,” explains Stanley El Komala, senior product manager intrusion at BGW Technologies.

“Offering the first line of defence by adding a boundary or perimeter to increase the effectiveness of a security solution, the OPXAX-200TF requires hardwiring, but the OPXAX-200TFR which offers similar features to the OPXAX-200TF, is powered by lithium batteries (power source 2x 3.6DC/13AH for transmitter and 2x 3.6VDC/13AH for receiver and current draw about 810 µA), allowing for perimeter protection to be installed in locations where mains power is not available.”

Optex PE Beam Wireless Ready

According to El Komala, while the Optex PE with PowerG on board is only available in the US, recognising the value of this solution to the local market, the BGW Technologies’ team has created a kit that matches the functionality of the US model.

“The set up involves adding the OPXBCU-5 for the battery common unit to share power between PE Beam and also the DSC PowerG Transmitter (DSCPG4945),” El Komala says. “By pairing the Optex wireless beams with the DSC transmitter it can be used on DSC PowerSeries Neo or Qolsys IQ Panel 4 (QOLIQP4021).

“There is also a BYO transmitter option if looking to pair it with another brand wireless panel. The integration makes this a market-leading perimeter detection using active infrared technology (Photoelectric beams) enhanced by the range of PowerG wireless.”

Optex PE Beam Wireless Ready

There are plenty of good reasons to install wireless AIRs beams, according to BGW Technologies state manager NSW, Graham Clark.

“The nice thing about the wireless beam combo is that you can deploy beams on a perimeter or gate without trenching/cabling out to it plus the battery life is a very respectable at 3-5 years,” Clark says.

“By incorporating the OPXAX-200TFR detector with the OPXBCU-5 unit, users can achieve unparalleled security for their premises. The system’s ability to detect intrusions with precision and accuracy ensures that any unauthorised entry is promptly identified, alerting security personnel in real-time.”

Hunting Attenuation in LANs

Hunting Attenuation in LANs
Hunting Attenuation in LANs Poses Challenges.

Hunting Attenuation in LANs Poses Challenges.

Hunting Attenuation in LANs – Techs face challenges when trying to check for signal losses in LAN environments.

Like all cable networks, there will be attenuation of the data signal through connections, over distance, and through challenging environments. Factors include the resistance, inductance and capacitance of the cable itself, as well as near-end crosstalk.

To make things more complicated, variations in temperature will have a big impact on cable impedance and this will have a direct effect on signal strength.

Another issue is that LAN cables have weak original signals to meet their own EMI specifications. As installations get more complicated, with increases in cross-connect hardware and connectors, the importance of workmanship to reduce signal loss has also increased.

Environmental EMI is an issue – particularly in some of the horrific networking closets that you see. Every network and power cable produces an electromagnetic frequency – even cable that has been twisted to reduce emission propagation. The more cables in an environment and the way they cross paths with each other can also attenuate signals within cables.

Othe factors that can impact on signal strength include construction of the space in which cables are located, temperature variations including cold and heat, but the greatest contributor to signal loss apart from poor termination or cable damage is distance.

Hunting Attenuation in LANs
Hunting Attenuation in LANs Poses Challenges.

There are strategies techs can use to ensure cable performance, including keeping cabling tidy, ensuring cables cross at right angles rather than swirling around each other, keeping cable runs within specification from the outset, choosing better quality, higher performance cables, avoiding low quality cables, avoiding extreme temperatures that might be found in roof spaces, and installing amplifiers or repeaters where required to buffer signals.

Be aware it’s not easy to test for attenuation, jitter, signal strength and crosstalk on LANs without a dedicated tool. If you buy a test tool, go for a unit that can also test the cables high speed data transmission capability. A professional LAN test tool with collision readings and analysis software can be expensive but if you undertake a lot of cabling, it’s a worthwhile investment.

There are plenty of cheaper units out there though quality and accuracy are likely open to question in some cases. You might also find that you can get away with a micromapper or something simpler than the high-end Fluke units, like a Klein Tools Scout Pro 3.

The micromapper is a simple tool that can indicate a range of issues across multiple cable strands but it can’t give a real sense of live cable performance or EMI. The Scout 3 has greater capability but if you want to test for PoE and other extras, you’ll need add-ons.

There are shortcuts you can take to visualise LAN performance, including checking NIC settings on an attached PC to look for traffic packet loss – a few per cent is tolerable. Above 25 per cent and you’d want to think about replacing the cable in a heavily trafficked LAN. You can also simply bridge a bung LAN cable run and see whether the bridge cable resolves the issues you’re experiencing.

You can read more about the Scout Pro 3 here or see more SEN news here.

Banks Retailers Prop Up Armaguard But Only Until Q3.

Banks Retailers Prop Up Armaguard – Australian banks and major retailers have agreed to prop up struggling cash in transit service provider Armaguard, but the $26 million cash injection won’t last until the end of the year.

The planned emergency funding will proffer the company tens of millions in financial support to continue carrying cash until Q3 but the banks, Wesfarmers, Coles, Woolworths and Australia Post still haven’t heard back from Armaguard on the deal.

Coles is sufficiently concerned about the possibility of Armaguard’s collapse it is hoarding cash in stores rather than risking it being locked in Armaguard trucks should the the business be placed into administration over the Easter break.

The issue for banks and retailers is that they need cash carry services but don’t want to pay more for them than they used to. And the issue for Linfox-owned Armaguard, which bought struggling competitor Prosegur last year, is that its business model has been broken by an all-encompassing digital payments system.

Banks Retailers Prop Up Armaguard

Should Linfox decide to shutter Armaguard, the banks and retailers will be forced to provide cash carrying services themselves, with all the complexities of setup, staff training, vehicle procurement and insurance that such a specialised service requires.

This latest offer of support is designed to help Armaguard operate until a long-term solution can be found but what that long-term solution is going to be remains unclear.

Banks Retailers Prop Up Armaguard 2 LR
Banks retailers prop up Armaguard.

The issue is dire enough that the discussions are being led by the Australian Banking Association under an authorisation granted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank, which regulates the payments industry and prints cash, has also been forced into the discussions.

A key issue for the banks is that there’s a cross guarantee expiry date between Armaguard and Linfox that rises in the first week of April – at that point Armaguard can enter voluntary administration without exposing Linfox to contractual obligations.

Banks Retailers Prop Up Armaguard

The short-term funding offered last week is lower than the $190 million over 3 years Armaguard told the industry it required to operate profitably late October 2023. This new funding may encourage Linfox to continue supporting Armaguard until deeper into the year. But it may simply clarify hard business decisions.

In December, Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock suggested a co-operative cash in transit model might be explored, but it would certainly depend on significant government funding, and would cost the banks and retailers a lot more that they were paying Armaguard.

If the managers of Armaguard consider their options in a strictly prudential light – with the near total collapse of cash payments occurring in a very short space of time and certain to continue – it’s possible we may see the end of Armaguard within the month.

At the same time, it might be possible for Armaguard management to play brinkmanship hard enough to carve out a guaranteed niche supplying a service no one wants to pay for but nobody can do without – least of all the Federal Government.

Breaking news this afternoon – Armaguard has rejected the offer that would save the company from insolvency but what its intentions are remain unclear – more here.
