Hikvision Smart Hybrid Light Camera With ColorVu Daylight First Impressions.

Hikvision Smart Hybrid Light Camera – Hikvision’s new Pro Series DS-2CD2387G2H-LI(U) 8MP Smart Hybrid Light Camera with ColorVu has arrived at the SEN office for testing.

Typically, we’d do a just-arrived tease with the camera in the office, but we made a blunder – this was meant to be a first impressions test but once the camera was out front of the office, we realised the first impressions of a dual light hybrid camera are best done at night!

This camera is a fixed day/night turret camera with smart dual (40m IR and visible) long range lighting, 130dB of wide dynamic range, H.265/H.264 and H.264+/H.265+ compression technologies, deep learning classification of people and vehicles, an integrated microphone and an IP67 rating against dust and water.

The Hikvision Smart Hybrid ColorVu has a 1/1.8-inch progressive scan CMOS sensor delivering a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and delivering a minimum illumination of 0.0008 lux @ F1.0 with AGC on in colour.

There are 2 fixed lens options – 2.8mm giving an angle of view around 109 degrees and 4mm giving around 93 degrees both these lenses have a superfast aperture of F1.0. Both lenses can be adjusted through 360 degrees and tilted 75 degrees. For this test, we are using the 2.8mm version.

Basic event motion detection of people and vehicles can drive alarms and recording, with events detected including line crossing detection, intrusion detection, region entrance detection, region exiting detection, scene change detection and face capture. The camera supports upload to FTP/NAS/memory card, notification of monitoring centre, trigger recording, trigger capture and sending an email.

Hikvision Smart Hybrid Light Camera impressions – this image is without backlight – a nicely balanced image.

Our daylight first impressions suggested this is a well-constructed turret-style camera with a strong specification. We played with the settings sliders when the Hikvision team dropped the camera off and helped with setup (thanks, Devin).

We eased back on saturation and increased sharpness and brightness. We also upped the shutter speed to 1/25sec from a very low default. Because it’s a hybrid light camera, we slid the white light settings to 100 per cent.

Here’s the view with around 70,000 lux on the street and no WDR settings…

Our first look was in the morning with nearly 70,000 lux measured on the Sekonic light meter on the street in front of the lens and a thin band of shadow on the near side of the street. To handle this, we brought in 30 per cent WDR.

This camera a wide angle of view, about 9 per cent barrel distortion, excellent colour rendition with a slight tendency to overexpose before WDR was activated.

This image has 25 per cent WDR – there’s good detail of the tiling in the shade.

The resolution is sufficient to make a couple of mouse wheel clicks of digital zoom useful. The camera liked some WDR assist with extreme backlight and handled a challenging scene well. With WDR activated there was a little amplifier noise in shaded areas but the overall scene was well balanced.

I was not at default WDR – I sat at 25 per cent to minimise processing and colour artefacts across the scene. Depth of field is a particular strength – we were getting useful information out past 70 metres in our busy street scene.

These settings worked for a while but later in the afternoon, things got over exposed on the far side of the street and I went for 100 per cent WDR – the images here speak for themselves.

With full WDR activated in this more challenging scene, where a considerable part of the opposite streetscape is dishing up huge reflectance, the Hikvision camera does itself credit. The image is slightly low contrast – a bit like an Axis image.

This is a nice image at full WDR – you can see the depth of field (and some CAs) if you click to maximise…
