Inside the Avigilon Intercom Touch – BGW Technologies’ Peter Ha says that the standout feature of the Avigilon Intercom Touch is consolidation of features and functions.
“You’re getting video, 2-way audio, a door reader and a 7-inch touchscreen directory in a single unit, with the controller built in,” he says.
“Tenants can even answer video calls on their mobile phone or use #9 to unlock a door via a landline. For installers, that means fewer components to specify, fewer devices to mount and fewer points of failure to troubleshoot over the life of the system.”
Avigilon Intercom Touch is powered and connected by a single PoE+ cable, with 12/24V backup available where additional resilience is required and offers both surface and flush mounting options.
“That efficiency carries through to the installation itself,” Ha says. “There’s no additional hardware needed to bring it onto Avigilon Alta. Commissioning is straightforward, and installers can move on to the next job with confidence.”
According to Ha, during development, Avigilon took care to ensure that the hardware specification was well thought out.
“The unit boasts a 5MP wide-angle camera with infrared, and the front-facing LED delivers clear identification in both the daytime and night-time conditions, while a 3W speaker with noise-cancelled audio ensures users can rely on clear communication with visitor,” he says.
“Additionally, a radar-powered reader enables the convenient ‘wave to unlock’ feature, while supporting keycards, Apple Wallet mobile credentials and QR guest passes through Alta Visitor.”
Entry topology
Toggle between a typical conventional entry and a single Intercom Touch.
Why it matters: every device removed from the door is one less part to specify, mount, cable and fault-find. The lock and exit hardware still need wiring — the consolidation is in everything around them.
Work it out for your switch
Plan the Intercom Touch at the full PoE+ allocation and see what’s left for everything else.
2 intercoms and 8 other devices reserve 183.2 W of a 370 W budget (50%).
Worst-case, class-based allocation: IEEE 802.3at reserves up to 30 W at the switch port for a Class 4 device (25.5 W reaches the device; the rest is cable loss). Switches that allocate by measured draw or LLDP negotiation will show more headroom. The article does not state the unit’s actual draw — confirm it on the datasheet. Awesome, too, for grittier applications, the unit is rated IP65 and IK08, making it well suited to locations where it may be exposed to harsh weather or vandalism.
“The nice thing about this unit is that the long-term value really lies in the platform,” Ha says. “Everything is managed through the Alta web dashboard and mobile apps, alongside the client's cameras and readers.
“User records can sync from leading people and property management systems, which significantly reduces onboarding time. Combined with Avigilon’s AI analytics that can flag incidents, trigger alerts or automatically lock doors, installers are positioned to deliver a far more compelling solution.”
That, Ha explains, is where BGWT's role in backing installers up on every job becomes clear.
“We're not simply supplying hardware,” Ha says. “From system design and pre-sales advice through to training and technical support, we've got you on every job.”
