Can A Video Intercom Replace A PIR Sensor To Cover An External Entry Point?

Can A Video Intercom Replace A PIR Sensor – Is the video analytics detection performance of a video intercom like a Ring doorbell as capable as a PIR sensor when it comes to detecting human targets in real world situations – could a video intercom stand in for a PIR sensor?

A: We have a Ring video intercom – in fact we like it so much we bought another one – covering an area that’s also covered by an Ajax PIR camera so we have real world experience to depend on in making this call.

We love the Ring – it’s very clever with package detection and when telling us things like “person with bag and cup walking on paved area” and it can even detect people over the one-lane road.

Image quality is great, too, better than any PIR camera could be. But it’s not so good at detecting people close to the lens moving at right angles. You get events like that around front doors. And sometimes we notice it misses some events altogether.

Conversely, the Ajax sensor – it’s just an internally rated MotionCam under the deep roofline, never misses any of the curiously large number of people who find themselves with nowhere better to be than our front balcony.

Couriers drop by obviously, but often it’s just random people poking around in the bushes. There are times we wish the Ring scored some high-res footage to go along with the 640-pixel Ajax triples we always get but there are times it doesn’t.

These are not the only sensors and video doorbells or intercoms on the market, so doing some testing of your own is advised, however, the Ring is highly evolved and unlikely to be less discerning than other similar units.

For reference, these devices are set to highest sensitivity and highest image quality – we like having both – but the PIR is the better intrusion detector.
