How Far Can a Camera Really See? Inside Pelco’s Silent Sentinel.
How Far Can a Camera Really See? Most CCTV jobs are measured in metres but Pelco’s Silent Sentinel camera performance is measured in kilometres. BGW Technologies product manager Peter Ha looks at the far end of what a security camera can do.
“Most of us spend our days thinking in metres, and that’s exactly right for the work we do,” says Ha. “But it’s worth knowing where the ceiling is. Silent Sentinel shows you what happens when thermal imaging, optics and precision engineering are pushed as far as they can go.
“To give some context, think about the last camera you put up. Maybe a turret over a loading dock, or a bullet covering the car park behind a strip of shops. You framed the shot, checked the night image and made sure a face at the door would hold up. On a typical commercial job, the furthest thing in view might be 40 or 50 metres away.
“Now picture a camera on a coastal headland that can detect a person walking along a beach more than 4 kilometres away, in complete darkness. Or one on a mast that can spot a threat 30 kilometres out, further than the drive from Sydney’s CBD to Parramatta – that’s the world of Silent Sentinel, the long-range camera range that now sits within the Pelco portfolio under Motorola Solutions,” Ha says.
“The secret is a pairing of 2 very different cameras in a single housing. The first is a thermal sensor, which doesn’t need light at all. It reads the heat given off by people, vehicles and vessels, so darkness, glare and many fog and smoke conditions that would blind an ordinary camera simply don’t matter.
“The second is a high-powered visible camera with a long optical zoom. Thermal tells you something is there. The visible camera tells you what it is. An operator can spot a heat signature kilometres away, swing the visible lens onto it and confirm whether it’s a person, a vehicle, a boat or a kangaroo. That’s what turns detection into a decision.”
Aeron is the compact member of the family, yet it can detect a person at up to 4.6 kilometres and a vehicle at up to 14.3 kilometres, with a 30x optical zoom HD camera to confirm what it’s found. It turns a full circle in just over two seconds, aims to within roughly 17 centimetres at a kilometre, and is rugged and light enough to mount on a mast, a patrol vehicle or a vessel.
Meanwhile, Jaegar is the long-distance flagship of the range.
“Jaegar is Silent Sentinel’s long-distance flagship, able to detect human and vehicle threats at up to 30 kilometres, with a 2400mm visible zoom more at home on a telescope than a security camera,” Ha explains. It’s less a single camera and more a platform.”
According to Ha, these aren’t cameras for the local shopping centre.
“Silent Sentinel is designed for sites where the boundary stretches for kilometres and early warning is everything,” he says.
“Pelco highlights 4 core verticals: defence and military, including protection of bases and critical assets and early warning against drones; border protection, where vast perimeters and difficult terrain can make fences alone insufficient; aviation, including airport perimeters, airfields and runways; and maritime and coastal applications covering ports, harbours and coastlines.
“For most integrators, a Jaegar won’t be on the next quote, but understanding the top end pays off at every level. The ideas you see here, such as thermal for detection, visible for verification and smart tracking, are already working their way into the cameras you install every week,” Ha says.
“If you understand what’s possible at 30 kilometres, you’ll have a much better conversation with a client about what’s possible at 300 metres. And for the integrator who does land the port, the airport or the remote perimeter, it helps to know this level of capability is available.”
According to Ha, the first question is always how far you need to see, and what you need to do once you’ve seen it – Silent Sentinel has an answer for both.
“Whether you’re curious about thermal or scoping a project measured in kilometres, chat to the BGW Technologies team,” Ha says. “We’ve got you covered from lens selection and detection range planning through to pre-sales design and technical support.”
