Ivanhoe Grammar Axis Milestone – Ivanhoe Grammar School has deployed Axis panoramic network cameras monitor safety around its new sports and aquatic centre.

As a provider of education to more than 2200 children across 3 campuses in greater Melbourne, Ivanhoe Grammar School possesses a duty of care and responsibility to its students and their families.

The school takes a proactive approach to student, faculty and visitor safety by employing digital infrastructure that includes Axis Communications network cameras and intercoms, providing access control and active incident detection and deterrence throughout the school’s public spaces.

“Just having the cameras and the intercom system is a proactive approach to campus security for staff, students and visitors,” says Winston Mattson, director, Systems and Infrastructure, Ivanhoe Grammar School.

“It’s about maintaining the campus security, keeping the campus locked down as practicably as possible, and using this technology to help us with those goals.”

In June 2022, Ivanhoe Grammar School officially opened its dedicated Sports and Aquatic Centre, a 6-level structure incorporating a range of facilities, including a 50-metre, 8-lane swimming pool, 4 basketball and netball courts, and 2 rooftop tennis courts.

As the largest capital works project the school has ever undertaken, Mattson said it was imperative that the new centre was equipped with the right technology to ensure the safety and security of those using it.

Ivanhoe Grammar School decided to deploy a range of Axis network cameras and intercoms throughout the new centre to deliver the visibility and incident detection functionality needed to manage student, staff and visitor safety at the new site, expanding its 3-campus CCTV network to more than 290 cameras.

“The Sports and Aquatic Centre is one of the newest facilities we’ve completed,” says Mattson. “It was a natural progression to continue to use Axis in that environment – we’ve been very happy with the quality of the products and the reliability.

Ivanhoe Grammar School employs a range of Axis network cameras across its campuses, including the P3248-LV, P3248-LVE, P3818-PVE, P3807-PVE, and P9106-V models. It also employs Axis’ network intercoms to manage and secure its external entries and exit points.

Thanks to the 180-degree visual coverage enabled by devices such as the AXIS P3807-PVE and P3818-PVE panoramic network cameras, Ivanhoe Grammar School has been able to capture the full breadth of the Sports and Aquatic Centre’s pool environment with just a couple of cameras and still gain comprehensive coverage of the entire space. The school has been able to obtain full visibility of its sports fields thanks to the field of view provided by Axis’ panoramic cameras.

“As camera technology gets better, we’re able to cover more spaces – previously with older cameras you wouldn’t be able to cover a space like a basketball court with one camera,” Mattson said.

“With some of the camera models such as the 180-degree cameras like the Q3819, the P818 and the P3807, we can now easily cover sporting fields. We’ve also got a couple of those models in our pool environment to ensure safety at the new centre.”

According to Mattson, the new Axis cameras easily integrate with Ivanhoe Grammar School’s existing Milestone XPRotect video management platform, as well as video analytics software from Icetana, which is used to identify unusual changes in behavioural patterns, flagging potential incidents captured by cameras.

“What I like about the Axis technology is the ability to integrate with third party products, such as Cisco and Icetana, the latter of which provides artificial intelligence,” Mattson said.

“This capability enables the proactive use of the cameras rather than just being reactive, always going back to look at the camera footage after something happens, searching through hours of footage to find an event.”

The analytics integration capability gives the school the ability to identify and respond to potential incidents in real-time, rather than waiting until after an incident occurs before finding the appropriate footage to review for incident investigation.

Ivanhoe Grammar School’s decision to take on high resolution Axis network cameras has given the school the ability to not only investigate incidents on-campus in detail, even across large open spaces, it has also meant the school can assist law enforcement in its investigations of incidents that occur on public streets beyond the perimeter of the school’s grounds.

For example, the Axis P3818-PVE Panoramic Camera offers 180-degree coverage with 13MP resolution. With a maximum video resolution of 5120 x 2560 pixels and a maximum of 30 frames per second, the camera offers Ivanhoe Grammar School a huge angle of view and depth of field.

Meanwhile, the cyber security features built into Axis’ network camera technology means Ivanhoe Grammar School can maintain students’ privacy to a high level. As an educational institution, Ivanhoe Grammar School has a duty of care to protect students’ privacy as well as their safety and security.

“We take the privacy of our cameras very seriously, and we restrict who can look at the footage,” said Mattson. “Not just anybody can come through to look at the footage. It’s got to go through a process. And of course, if we need to use the footage or have to hold onto it for evidence purposes for the police, for example, only authorised people can request the footage, because we’ve got to maintain privacy.”

Ivanhoe Grammar School has also made use of the integration capabilities of Axis’ intercom technology, linking its Axis network intercom footprint with its existing Cisco IP phone system, avoiding the requirement for a separate end-to-end intercom system.

This integration enables authorised staff in various departments, such as the catering team, to closely control all access points throughout the school, in turn maintaining campus security and keeping the sites locked down as practicably as possible to ensure student, staff and visitor safety.

At the same time, Ivanhoe Grammar School’s partnership with Axis underpins the school’s sustainability efforts, with Axis focus on sustainably produced products backed up with Green Tick Certified approval, denoting products or services that have been independently certified as environmentally sustainable.

“The school has objectives to be sustainable and to use sustainable equipment and resources where possible,” Mattson said. “Leveraging the sustainability, low-power usage of Axis cameras is one of the reasons you partner with an organisation.

“We’re continually updating and expanding to cover more areas of the campus – our partnership with Axis recognises that while we can’t have a staff member everywhere all the time, we can use technology to ensure we fulfill our duty of care to staff and students.”
