The contract is to upgrade Sydney Ferries Corporation’s CCTV system over 9 months and operate it for the next 5 years. DT, part of Tyco Fire and Security, is the world’s largest electronic security company and it will equip Sydney Ferries’ wharves with 24-hour surveillance as a deterrent against terrorism, crime, violence and anti-social behaviour. “The State Government’s decision to appoint ADT can be attributed to the range of integrated solutions we offer organizations building on 130 years experience in the industry,” says Mark Norton, general manager for ADT Australia. “We are proud to be part of this extensive security upgrade and are confident that this partnership demonstrates ADT’s commitment to ensuring that Sydney Ferries passengers are protected by world-class security systems.” According to ADT, a similar contract announced with RailCorp, the operator of the huge rail network that covers the Sydney metropolitan area and nearby regional areas, reflects ADT’s experience and expertise in managing large security contracts for key government infrastructures. The contract upgrade includes an extra 87 cameras to be installed over the next few months, representing an increase in system size by 44 per cent, with total camera numbers supporting Sydney Ferries increasing to 184. There will also be an upgrade of existing security infrastructure with improvements being undertaken at Circular Quay, Manly and Balmain Shipyard, as well as maintenance and monitoring services. Other improvements to the system will see an improvement in the quality of live and recorded images, improvements to public information through a new public address system, as well as an upgrade of passenger Emergency Help Points and Transport Infoline 131 500 Help Points on existing wharves. There are 44 wharf location around the Sydney Harbour foreshore and with 14 million people using the waterway each year, ADT says the security upgrades will help ensure that passengers are protected from potential threats.
