Optic Security Collaborating With Balga TAFE On New Pathways To Security Industry.

Optic Security Collaborating With Balga TAFE – Optic Security Group is collaborating with Balga TAFE to deliver hands-on mentoring and mock interviews for electrical pre-apprenticeship students.

Patrick Hill, operations manager for Optic Security Group WA, Perth branch, was recently invited to conduct mock interviews for 15 students at Balga TAFE. Alongside Alex Sheed from Sheed Electrical WA, and Ron Hill, the students’ lecturer.

With interview spots in electrical roles often attracting over 100 applicants, the goal was to prepare students with real-world interview experience. Each 15-minute session involved professional questioning, an opportunity for students to ask questions, and personalised feedback to boost their readiness for real world job interviews.

“For me, this is about giving back to the security and electrical industry that has supported my career and apprentices over the years,” Hill said. “It’s also a chance to show these students the diverse pathways they can take within the trade, including security.

“The converged security sector, where technology and trade expertise meet, is evolving fast. We need bright, capable individuals to join us and drive the future of this industry. These kinds of initiatives help us uncover and attract that talent early.”

Hill said the initiative highlights Optic’s forward-thinking approach to nurturing future talent and expanding awareness of the security industry in Australia.

“As an innovator in security solutions, Optic sees electrical trades as a key pipeline to build future capabilities,” Hill said. “The company believes that by mentoring students and providing insight into alternative career paths like security, it can support not only the trades sector but also the growth of the security industry itself.

“At Optic, we are constantly looking for new ways to support both our industry and future tradespeople. The talent pool for security professionals is growing more diverse, and many of these young men and women have the skills to excel in both trades and technology-focused roles. We want them to see security not just as an option, but as a dynamic and rewarding career choice.”

According to Hill, Australia’s security industry plays a crucial role in safeguarding infrastructure, businesses, and communities. However, Hill said sector is facing challenges in attracting skilled talent due to misconceptions about what the industry offers. Initiatives like the one at Balga TAFE are a step toward changing that narrative by exposing students to the real-world applications of trade skills within security.

Vicki Barber, brand strategy and innovation director at Optic Security Group emphasised the importance of supporting young people in their early career journeys.

“We need to empower the next generation with the resources and skills they need to succeed, whether that’s in the trades or other career paths,” Barber said. “Experiences like mentoring and interview practice are invaluable because they bridge the gap between education and the workforce.

“It’s about giving students the confidence and practical knowledge they need to navigate the professional world. At Optic, we see it as our responsibility to support these experiences, and we are excited about initiatives like this that foster growth, connection, and real-world learning.”

How To Avoid Alarm Zone Noise Induction In Hardwired Applications.

How To Avoid Alarm Zone Noise Induction – Key to avoiding noise induction in wired alarm installations is staying away from sources of EMI and RFI. That’s going to include electric motors, plant rooms, wireless transmitters, power cables and more.

There are also things techs can do within an installation that increase a system’s resistance to induced noise. Keep grounding wires short and straight as possible when installing alarm panels and make sure there are no twists or kinks in the grounding wire.

Never run zone loops and AC power through the same panel knockouts and try to keep them separate inside the panel case as much as possible. Use shielded AC cable, taking the drain wire to the panel’s ground terminal and leaving it unconnected at the plug pack. If zone loops and AC cables must cross paths, make sure they do so at right angles and fix them so they don’t slide alongside each other later.

When you have no choice but to run AC and zone loop cable in the same tray, conduit or through the same header or stud breach, use more zone loop cable than you need to cover the distance. Let the wire coil up a bit and it will be more resistant to induced AC.

Make sure you get your digital multimeter out and check panel ground when commissioning the system. If it differs to other grounds in the building by more than 2 ohms then you’ve not found true ground and you’ll need to try again.

Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and talk to experts before trying anything out of the ordinary with equipment you’re installing. Every panel will have a separate grounding terminal – you should be very sure of what you’re doing before you start connecting ground wires to unrelated terminals.

How To Clean A Camera Sensor

How To Clean A Camera Sensor In CCTV Applications.

How To Clean A Camera Sensor – What’s the best way to clean a CCTV camera sensor? The camera in question is a high-end fixed camera in an external housing in which the seals have failed. Will a lens cloth do the trick?

A: Typically, there’s a glass filter in front of the CMOS sensor with the sensor underneath this, covered by a very thin Bayer filter applied directly to the sensor itself. Exactly what the task of the glass filter is varies by design, but typically it improves sensitivity lost by the attenuation of the Bayer filter, as well as filtering UV and IR.

The point here is that you won’t be cleaning the sensor itself, but the glass filter on top of it. Nevertheless, you don’t want to play silly buggers with a sensor filter. The issue if you start rubbing the sensor filter with a lens cloth or lens brush is that you might not so much scratch the filter as smear it with oil or dirt, or add another layer of fibre and dust to the surface.

We’d consider buying an LED loupe, which will allow you to look at the sensor under magnification and light. You’ll clearly be able to see any dust or fibres using a loupe. You can then use a blower and/or a lenspen to clear away any debris.

Experience suggests the blower will get the fibres to move but you’ll need a lenspen to get rid of electrostatically charged dust particles. Any grease or oil residue, as well as thicker layers of industrial dust, will demand a wet clean, which is another thing entirely. A wet clean is a last resort play – you need to be prepared to lose the camera.

All this said, unless there’s something very large on the sensor lens, it’s not going to have an impact on the viewed scene thanks to the inherent speed of CCTV lenses. You might see a constellation of dust specs at f32 when pointing your lens at blue sky, but it won’t be an issue at f1.4 viewing a crowded streetscape.
