i-PRO Unveils New Heavy-Duty Aero PTZ – i-PRO has announced the addition of 19 new 2MP and 4K models to its Aero PTZ camera line (read our review of the previous model here) featuring enhanced durability and edge AI processing and available locally through distributors, including BGW Technologies.
Built for extreme weather and environmental conditions, the new, heavy-duty Aero PTZ cameras feature i-PRO’s highly evolved AI-driven analytics. With a zoom range of up to 40x, the shock-resistant, water-proof Aero PTZ cameras are IK10, MIL-STD-167-1A, and IP66/68 rated for uninterrupted video protection during extreme weather conditions. They are also resistant to heavy salt corrosion (C5-M).
The camera can operate reliably and clearly in temperatures from -50 to 65C with i-PRO’s newly developed transparent glass heater. The Aero PTZ includes a robust pan and tilt motor mechanism that ensures accurate movement in winds up to 270km/h, exceeding the Saffir-Simpson wind speed rating for Category-5 cyclones and hurricanes.
The Aero PTZ is equipped with AI-based auto-tracking to keep persons and vehicles in focus, even in complete darkness, up to 560 meters with IR illumination.
i-PRO’s open AI development platform allows multiple AI applications to be installed as needed for the operational environment, including third-party apps. With up to 3 simultaneous AI apps on the 4K model and up to 2 simultaneous AI apps on the 2MP models, a wide range of customized solutions are available.
For example, when installed at a shipping port, a salt-resistant Aero PTZ could run the latest Vaxtor OCR application to read shipping container numbers as they pass through the port. At the same time, fire and smoke could be detected using a Noema detection app.
For maximum cybersecurity resilience, the cameras incorporate signed firmware, brute-force protection, and FIPS 140-2 level 3 compliance with a secure element chip to safeguard against cyber threats.
The Aero PTZ is designed for hassle-free setup. It features easy kitting, cable connectors, and a newly developed mount bracket that supports one-person installation. Flexible power options support 100-240V AC or 24V AC/DC power for virtually any installation environment.
Multiple resolutions and illuminators (IR light, white light) plus a range of body colours are also available to meet diverse operational needs. Meanwhile, support for additional industry standards includes NEMA TS2 (Traffic), MIL STD-810-G (US DoD), IEC 62236-4, and EN 50121-4 (Railway).

Are Longer Lenses Better For Security Investigations Or Will Wider Angles Do?
Are Longer Lenses Better For Security Investigations – Does SEN think most applications should feature a much smaller angle of view than we typically see and more use of cameras with overlapping fields of view?
A: If money was no object, you’d opt for multiple cameras with longer focal lengths that gave sufficient coverage of a scene. That said, you’d still want a wider angle of view specifically to give situational awareness so as to highlight the way people and objects are interacting.
There are applications in which those landscape-style, 120-degree-plus fields of view are ideal – lobbies, public transport, foyers, meeting rooms. But 120-degrees-plus doesn’t translate as well into deeper scenes unless situational awareness is all you want.
With wide angles, a covered space needs to be compact, and applications should be tested to ensure a particular camera and lens meet a particular operational requirement. While the tiny hyperfocal distance of wide-angle lenses keeps everything in focus optically, pixel spread means resolution is spread very thin.
In good light, wide angle lenses work better with larger sensors that have more pixels, yet in these penny-pinching times they are too often found on cameras with the smallest and least expensive sensors that try to do everything but do nothing well.
Are Longer Lenses Better For Security Investigations
In short, resolution is important, and you can gain resolution by reducing angle of view. You also flatten the image and reduce areas of softness induced by extreme lens profiles. Perspective is altered with wide angle lenses, too. Objects can appear further apart than they are. Conversely, longer lenses compress objects in a scene and that can be very useful for clever operators.
We’d argue sharpness is the key for security investigators, day or night. A soft, low-resolution image is no use for video surveillance teams unless it’s verifying alarm events and/or governing real time response teams.
You can learn more about the challenges of using wide angle lenses here – yes it’s a photography thread but much translates – or find more SEN news here.
